We have three optional classes offered in our Open Division. The classes have been designed to enhance the Classical Ballet training already received by the students enrolled in ballet and provide additional enrichment and strengthening to both ballet and non-ballet students.

Character
Character dance is a specific subdivision of classical dance. It is the stylized representation of a traditional folk or national dance. Character dance is mostly from European countries, and uses movements and music which have been adapted for the theater.
Character dance is integral to much of the classical ballet repertoire. A good example of character dance within a ballet is the series of national dances which take place at the beginning of Act III of Swan Lake.
Because character dances often feature hopping and running steps in character shoes and a lighthearted presentation, they can seem more relaxed than classical choreography. In reality, they entail complex upper-lower body opposition, e’paulement, and heel toe footwork. It is a strong training that can enhance classical and contemporary technique alike.
