Janice Barringer will be teaching a Master Ballet and Pointe Class for ages 13 and up at the Mount Dora School of Ballet on Saturday, December 14th from 10:00 until 12:00. Your dancers are cordially invited to attend the class, and teachers are welcome to come and observe. The fee for the two hour class is $10.00 per dancer. There is no fee for teachers.
Ms. Barringer’s family members were long time residents of Mount Dora. She received her early training in Orlando and completed her college degree before pursuing her performing career.
She performed for over twenty years with New York Dance Theatre, The Maryland Ballet, as permanent guest artist with Ballet Theater of Annapolis, and, along with her pas de deux partner, Edward Stewart, as a free lance guest artist, where they appeared with companies around the country. She also worked for several years with The Baltimore Symphony Orchestra dancing in educational concerts for school age children.
As her performing years started to subside, she turned to teaching beginning at the prestigious Harkness House in NYC. She later worked on the faculty of the Alvin Ailey School, Ballet Hispanico, and Steps on Broadway. Janice also taught in the dance department at Pace University which is located in NYC. In between she has toured and taught for Dance Makers Inc., Dance Caravan, Dance Olympus, Joe Tremaine Dance Conventions, Dance Masters of America and Dance Educators of America. She furthered her education by studying the Vaganova teaching method with leading teachers in the system.
In 1990 her first book, THE POINTE BOOK, was published by Princeton Book Company. It is considered “the bible” on the subject of pointe shoes and pointe training by dancers, parents, teachers and dancers around the world. In May of 2012 the Third Edition was published. She is also the co-author with Thalia Mara of another book, ON POINTE. In addition she has written articles on dance for Dancer, Dance, Pointe, Dance Spirit and Dance Teacher magazines. Janice continues to travel the world visiting leading ballet schools and companies, attending ballet and theatrical performances, seminars, workshops and conferences to keep expanding her knowledge on the subject of dance and technique.
Barrell of Books and Games located in downtown Mount Dora will be hosting a book signing for Ms. Barringer on December 14th from 3:30 to 5:00.
